Make Homeschool Fun with these Activities!!

Homework is a Lot More Fun When Your Children Are Interested in the Subject.

Making homeschool fun is about awakening the joy of learning within your child. That means the activity needs to be fun and interesting to your child.

Every child is unique so there’s no one size fits all. This list of activities isn’t meant to be a check box list of things to try, but rather a brainstorm and discovery process to help you find what your child is interested in.

Most kids choose a career based on a drop down menu from a College or University. When you remove that limitation, it can seem overwhelming to find something your child is interested in because the possibilities are endless.

That being said, you want to strive for creative projects that mirror real-life experiences so your child becomes deeply ingrained in the real world career they aspire to enter.

When you combine their passions and interests in a way that is both fun and deeply engaging, you will have found the perfect homeschool activity for your child to get the type of learning that sticks.

Adventures in Odyssey makes learning fun with audio entertainment that covers a wide range of topics including history, Bible stories, music, chemistry and other topics that helps kids discover their passions. It’s the perfect addition to your homeschool curriculum.

You’re about to learn how thousands of homeschoolers are using these fully dramatized audio stories to inspire learning & teach biblical values.

Activities for Homeschoolers

Field Trips & Road Trips

One of the most popular ways people listen to Adventures in Odyssey is on road trips.

A field trip can be something as simple as going to the library or a local museum. Roadtrips can be trips to visit National State Parks, camping, etc.

Going to visit places is a great way to spark your child’s interest to explore.

The Ultimate Road Trip Family Vacation Collection is a series of Audio Episodes all about exploring! Each episode lasts on average twenty-five minutes making it perfect for car rides.

Music

Music is a great way to inspire creativity. Activities around music could include taking kids to watch performers for various instruments.

Some kids don’t get interested in music because they are only given a single instrument like piano or guitar to start, but they may only be interested in drums or a wind instrument…

After watching a performer, then maybe taking them to a music store to see if they’d be interested in an instrument. If so, then you can consider music lessons at a local music school or a private tutor.

For some, worship is what makes learning music important. It teaches discipline, perseverance, and can build confidence as kids get good at an instrument.

Adventures in Odyssey episodes #970 & #971 (Precious Lord Part 1 & 2) is a story about a Gospel legend who, from a young age, set his heart on becoming a famous blues musician. This is a great story that teaches children on what it takes to achieve such a feat.

Play Organized Sports

The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat. There are many life lessons that kids can learn from organized sports.

This is also a great opportunity for kids to get social interaction and make friends.

The discovery process of what your child may be interested in is part of the excitement.

It may be good to go watch professional athletes perform to see if that sparks any interest in your child.

You can also consider active sports like biking, hiking, swimming, gymnastics, etc.

Find or Start a Homeschool Co-Op

The old adage “it takes a village to raise a child” can be a relief for parents who choose to homeschool.

Parents who try to take on homeschooling by themselves, will find that it can become overwhelming with not enough time to take on all kinds of activities.

A homeschool co-op is just a term used when people form groups in their community. Some people form local groups using Social Media or it can be a friend from church. Small or big, community is a big part of homeschooling and this may be one of the few items in here that should be a checkbox.

Worldschooling

In “worldschooling”, the world becomes the setting for learning. it is centered around experiences rather than formal instruction, books or lectures.

Reading about a place in a history book is not nearly as exciting as going to visit a historical place in real life!

Some people do choose an adventurous lifestyle and become “digital nomads,” traveling while working remotely.

Others simply make it a priority to travel and take kids to places of interest around the world.

This gives kids an opportunity to explore new countries, meet people from different cultures and gain a deep understanding of the world in a way traditional education can’t provide.

Arts & Crafts

Painting, coloring, doodling, or using household items to create art are all great ways to encourage creativity and imagination.

Every month, the Adventures in Odyssey Club provides kids with fun activities that involve crafts for kids.

Popular Thanksgiving homeschool activities are to check out an art supply store and create Christmas-themed crafts or build a gingerbread house.

A key thing about arts & crafts is that kids are motivated when they know that what they create matters. That’s why we like to recognize art work from Adventures in Odyssey fans.

We provide different opportunities for kids ages 8 – 12 to engage and submit their own artwork.

Below is an example of artwork we’ve featured from fans!

Creative Writing

Technology can seem to make our lives easier. Before mobile phones, we had to memorize phone numbers. Nowadays, many people don’t know the phone number of their closest friends and family members because phones do the memorizing for us.

Creative writing is becoming an important skill to develop in the age of AI. Having AI do the writing for us will have a similar impact except what’s at stake is more than our memory.

Writing helps us crystallize our thoughts. It helps us with critical thinking and focused attention. It is an important skill for brain development.

There’s a reason why they say “the pen is mightier than the sword”. That’s why we are happy to hear when kids use their creative writing to write out their own Adventures in Odyssey episode! Short stories and poems are great for creative writing.

Cooking & Baking

Home cooked meals are becoming a lost art. In a fast paced world, people are becoming accustomed to eating out and moving away from traditional cooking methods.

The opportunities for learning activities around cooking are endless.

You can start by teaching kids how to source food (maybe even grow it). This can provide opportunities to learn about growing zones and how to find food that is grown local, and in season.

You can take trips to local farmer’s market and get involved with your local community. You can learn about heirloom fruits and what makes food good and healthy.

Food tastes so much better when you care for every step of the process especially if you use traditional cooking methods. Many people grow up with store bought ketchup, and have never experienced true ketchup made the traditional way by lacto-fermenting heirloom tomatoes. Much better taste, and more nourishing than store bought.

Drawing

Drawing is an important lifeskill whether your child is looking to become an engineer or simply draw a business plan on a napkin.

Drawing can be something as simple as doodling or taking lessons to draw comics or other artwork. It can be an opportunity to learn about art history and art styles.

Drawing with graphite pencils is simple and a great way to introduce the fundamentals of art to your child.

You want to use drawing as an opportunity to encourage and connect with your child as they share their ideas, interests and experiences through art. This activity may spark ideas on other activities they may be interested in.

Visit a Farm

There are three essential life skills that should be taught in school…

#1 How to purify water
#2 How to build shelter
#3 How to grow food

Visiting a farm provides an opportunity for a child to see a way of life that’s different from city life. It exposes a different type of work, different challenges, and opportunities to spark interest in activities related to farming.

Museum Tours

Museums and art galleries are a great way to expose kids to various interests and explore a topic more in depth.

You never know when a child sees something at a museum that suddenly shapes their chosen endeavor in life. It could be a mining museum, a flight museum, sports museum, local history museum.

Museums can be a great way to observe your child as they discover their interests, or it can serve to go deeper into a topic they have already shown interest.
